Dogs & insurgents

Hei,

in a break of today's game day I did a li'l training with my boy. We trained a full arrest of an insurgent which had to be captured alive for questioning. In those cases, MP preferredly uses dogs.

A patrol spots an insurgent. Dog handler and two officers move in. Dog handler announces "Stop and surrender or I will send the dog"


Insurgent tries to run. Dog handler warns again.


Insurgent continues running, Dog goes off.


Insurgent evades dog's first attack and attacks the dog with a baton.


No chance, dog goes in hard.


After a short struggle, the insurgent surrenders and stands still as beeing told.


Dog handler and patrol move in, dog handler takes the dog off.


Patrol moves in with the dog still ready in the background.


Insurgent is arrested...


...and taken for questioning.


For the dog, this was real work! The insurgent had a bite protection sleeve but it was invisible for the dog under the sweater.

Nice stuff. Do/did you do similar stuff for real or is it more of a hobby?

Well, besides other things, I'm a certified protection dog handler and I have some years of experience in dog training. My dog is a 5 years old Malinois with (German) commercial protection dog licence and drug search training.
But as neither mine nor my dog's certificates are recognized here in FI and the requirements are different, I just do a little training every now and then to make sure, the dog is still well in control and to give him some fun .

In the army I had the pleasure to practice 5 arrests with a military police dogs. Those dogs were really fucking scary, especially when I had to go in there and handcuff the baddie while the dog was still holding on to his other arm... and once the dog tried to bite my hand too

Really fast and nasty, I would surrender on mere sight of those dogs now...

Ja, there are different approaches. I prefer the safer one. In our training, it was always like that that the dog stays in the bad guy until he surrenders. Then the patrol closes in but the arresting officers stay behind the dog handler until the dog is back on leash. Tactically this is no problem because if the bad guy just breathes the wrong way, the dog immediately hits back in.
This is safer because it's easier for the dog: guys in front of my boss are bad, guys behind my boss are good.
If anybody feels like having a little fun with a Malinois, be my guest. I always have my boys with me at Decon. Also photoshoots are possible .

Is that breed dog used by the police or military? It's a nice dog. I'd like something similar. Now if only I could make it down to Decon...

Malinois are since a couple of years the most preferred dogs for police work worldwide. They are faster, more intelligent and robust and easier to train (if you know what you are doing) than German Shepherds. Especially German Shepherds as a breed have more often serious health issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia due to breed selection for optics rather than performance.. Especially in USA, Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium, Malis make about 85-90% of the protection dogs.
Some authorities like e.g. The US Secret Service exclusively use Malis.

Big respect for mil/pol dogs, they got some unbelievable skills. We ''owned'' some opfor recon guys everytime pretty hard with a K9 when I was in the army doing MP stuff. I'm glad they have always been on my side
